The McGowan Government has partnered with Surfing WA and the World Surf League to support the mental health and wellbeing of Western Australians at surfing events for the next two years.

The funding of nearly $700,000 will be used by these surfing organizations to strengthen community mental health and wellbeing. The Margaret River Pro, one of the most watched international events on the World Surf League’s Championship Tour calendar, will also be included.

The surfing events include one of the most watched international events on the World Surf League’s Championship Tour calendar, the Margaret River Pro.

Surfing WA’s young surfer’s programs, including the Pathway to the Pro Series, Statewide Learn to Surf Programs, and Indigenous Leadership Program, will also be part of this initiative. Staff will receive mental health first aid training, and high-profile athlete event ambassadors will be present to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.

In addition, the Think Mental Health message will be promoted at the surfing events.

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson commented, “Both organisations have a genuine commitment to making a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of Western Australians.”

Sports and Recreation Minister David Templeman added, “Sport is a wonderful tool to have in your mental health first aid toolbox.”

By providing funding and resources for mental health first aid training, as well as promoting positive mental health messages at surfing events, this initiative will contribute to a healthier and happier surfing community. This partnership is a great example of how sports organizations and government entities can work together to make a positive impact on the overall health and wellbeing of Australians.
