New laws safeguard events, sponsors and supporters
The Confederation of Australian Sport welcomes the passage of legislation strengthening commercial and consumer protections around major sporting events in Australia.
The Major Sporting Events (Indicia and Images) Protection Amendment Bill 2026 strengthens protections for the official names, logos and imagery of major international sporting events. It will help prevent unauthorised ambush marketing, misleading claims of association and the sale of counterfeit merchandise.
CAS believes strong and clearly defined commercial protections are important to maintaining consumer trust and giving sponsors confidence that their investment in Australian sport will be recognised and protected.
Although the legislation is focused on major international events, these principles are relevant across the sporting system. Commercial partnerships provide vital support for events, organisations and participation opportunities at every level of Australian sport.
The legislation also creates a more streamlined process for extending these protections to future major events as Australia prepares for Brisbane 2032 and other international competitions.
