The Andrews Labor Government is committed to breaking down barriers to sporting participation and promoting inclusivity in the sport and recreation sector. With a focus on grassroots clubs, the government is providing crucial support to over 260 clubs across Victoria, facilitating easier access to sport for all.

During National Volunteer Week, Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence announced the latest recipients of the Sporting Club Grants Program, with a total funding allocation exceeding $520,000. These grants aim to empower clubs, enhance their capabilities, and recognize the invaluable contributions made by volunteers, enabling clubs to bounce back stronger this year.

One notable grant recipient is the North Bendigo Junior Football Club, which has been awarded $1,000 to acquire new uniforms for the establishment of additional mixed junior teams. This initiative will not only promote gender inclusivity but also foster a sense of belonging among young members. Another successful applicant, Bendigo’s North Central Strikers Netball Club, will receive $5,000 to develop a strategic plan aimed at encouraging more women and girls to participate in various roles within the club, such as players, volunteers, administrators, and coaches.

The Sporting Club Grants Program offers financial assistance across different categories. Clubs can receive up to $1,000 for uniforms and equipment, up to $2,000 for training or courses that enhance the skills of coaches, officials, volunteers, and administrators, and up to $5,000 for projects that expand participation opportunities, improve accessibility, or strengthen club operations.

Since its inception in 2015, the Sporting Club Grants Program has invested more than $15.5 million in supporting clubs and their dedicated volunteers throughout the state of Victoria. These grants have proven vital during both prosperous and challenging times, contributing to the sustainability and growth of community sporting activities.

The Labor Government is deeply committed to making community sport and recreation more accessible and inclusive. This initiative not only benefits individual clubs but also serves as a catalyst for stimulating local economies, fostering sustainable sport and recreation volunteer opportunities, and increasing overall participation rates.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence emphasized the significance of clubs and volunteers as the backbone of Victorian communities, underscoring the government’s dedication to supporting them. By investing in club memberships, providing assistance to volunteers, and promoting grassroots sports, the government aims to strengthen the fabric of local communities and nurture a sense of belonging among individuals.

“National Volunteer Week reminds us that clubs and their volunteers are the backbone of Victorian communities.”

“That’s why we’re backing more clubs with help to boost memberships, support volunteers and get behind grassroots sports that are an integral part of local communities.”

Through initiatives like the Sporting Club Grants Program, the Andrews Labor Government is paving the way for a more vibrant and inclusive sport and recreation landscape in Victoria.
