Kate MacKenzie, an avid horse rider, lives by the motto “get back on the horse” despite her numerous injuries sustained over the years. As a mother of two, MacKenzie and her daughters participate in equestrian events, particularly eventing, which includes a cross-country discipline involving navigating a course with jumps at high speeds. Equestrian sports have the highest rate of hospitalizations for women in Australia, accounting for nearly 90% of emergency visits related to sports injuries. Despite the risks involved, MacKenzie acknowledges the dangers but chooses not to dwell on them, finding the exhilaration and sense of accomplishment after a successful ride worth it.

Similarly, Garry James, an experienced competitive cyclist, has also faced his fair share of injuries throughout his two decades in the sport. Having broken multiple bones and sustained significant injuries, cycling has the highest rate of hospitalizations among all sports in Australia. However, James doesn’t fear vehicles on the road but rather wildlife encounters, such as his encounter with a kangaroo that led to a concussion and a broken collarbone. Despite the risks, James remains passionate about cycling, even though he is cautious when descending hills due to the potential threat of kangaroos.

While equestrian sports have taken steps to mitigate the risk of injury by having paramedics and on-site doctors at events, as well as ensuring riders are cleared after falls before continuing or leaving the venue, reducing the risk in cycling is more challenging. Cyclists face unpredictable factors such as animals, vehicles, weather, and terrain, making it harder to control potential dangers. Despite the risks involved, passionate cyclists like James continue to pursue their sport, recognizing the need for caution and taking necessary precautions like wearing proper protective gear.

In the face of these challenges and injuries, both Kate MacKenzie and Garry James demonstrate their resilience and determination to continue participating in their respective sports. While risks may always exist, their love for riding and cycling fuels their passion to overcome adversity and enjoy the thrill that comes with their chosen activities.
