The Confederation of Australian Sport (CAS) extends its warmest congratulations to all the outstanding individuals who have been recognized in the 2024 Australian Day Honours List. This year, 1042 Australians across various fields, including community service, science, industry, sport, and the arts, have been honored for their exceptional contributions and achievements.

The achievements of 1042 Australians across community service, science and research, industry, sport, the arts and more, were recognised in the Honours list, which includes:

  • 739 recipients of awards in the General Division of the Order of Australia
  • 20 recipients of awards in the Military Division of the Order of Australia
  • 224 Meritorious awards
  • 59 Distinguished and Conspicuous awards

His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), the Governor-General, announced the recipients today, highlighting their significant impact at local, national, and international levels. The recipients come from diverse backgrounds and have served in various capacities, reflecting the strength and diversity of our communities.

Among the honorees are nine members of the Australian athletics community, including the late Olympic silver medalist, Rick Mitchell. These individuals have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to athletics, sports administration, coaching, and community health.

The awards include appointments to the Order of Australia and meritorious awards, which recognize individuals for their distinguished service and consistent commitment to the betterment of the Australian community and humanity at large.

Athletics Australia Life Member Peter Duras AM and national technical official Lynne Schickert AM have been appointed Members of the Order of Australia (AM) for their exemplary service to athletics. The late Rick Mitchell OAM has been honored posthumously for his contributions as an athlete and sports administrator.

Other recipients, including athletes Heather Carr OAM and Pat Carroll OAM, have been recognized for their remarkable achievements in athletics and their contributions to community health. The honorees also include technical officials, coaches, and administrators who have played vital roles in shaping the narrative of Australian athletics.

The achievements of these individuals reflect the values of dedication, resilience, and excellence that are integral to the Australian sporting ethos. CAS applauds their remarkable achievements and thanks them for their invaluable contributions to Australian athletics and the wider community.

CAS also acknowledges the achievements of individuals from various sports, including cricket and surf lifesaving. From Cricket Australia’s Chief Executive Officer Christina Matthews to surf lifesavers recognized for their meritorious service, each honouree exemplifies dedication and commitment to their respective sports and communities.

CAS also commends the outstanding contributions of Ms. Valrie Mayger and Dr. Virginia Longley to equestrian sports and medicine, respectively. Their unwavering dedication has brought pride and honour to the Equestrian Western Australia community, reflecting the spirit of excellence that defines Australian sport.

CAS congratulates all the honourees on their well-deserved recognition and wishes them continued success in their future endeavours.
