Paralympic dance enthusiasts, namely Danielle Stitfall in partnership with Darryl Davenport, and Amanda Smith accompanied by Peter Hegarty, recently showcased their exceptional talents on the international stage. Their performances took center stage at the Tokyo 2023 Para Dance Sport International Competition held from August 5 to 6, 2023.

In a display of remarkable achievement, Danielle and Darryl clinched a coveted gold medal in the fiercely contested 3 Dance Combination category. Meanwhile, Amanda and Peter secured a commendable fifth place, a testament to their dedication and skill in the highly competitive environment.

Danielle’s journey in Para Dance Sport commenced in 2018, marked by her debut at the Australian Championship in Melbourne. Demonstrating unwavering commitment, she engages in rigorous training sessions thrice a week, complemented by monthly competitions. The collaborative and innovative atmosphere of Para Dance Sport resonates with her artistic spirit.

Amanda’s introduction to the sport was ignited by a chance encounter with it on social media. Her rapid immersion into Para Dance Sport was fueled by the allure of its challenges and the confidence it has instilled in her, illustrating the transformative power of sports.

Para-DanceSport has emerged and thrived within Australia for approximately five years, led by the administration of DanceSport WA and Para and Ability Dance WA in Western Australia. This inclusive sport encompasses athletes who utilize wheelchairs, possess visual impairments, or exhibit intellectual disabilities.

Competitions within the domain of Para-DanceSport encompass three distinct styles: Latin, standard ballroom, and new vogue. While Latin and standard ballroom are internationally contested, the comprehensive nature of the competitions amplifies the diversity and inclusivity of the sport.

The evolution of the Para-Dance program has been facilitated through the support of a Coaching and Officiating grant from the department. This grant has played an instrumental role in cultivating the expertise of DanceSport coaches who nurture and refine the skills of Para Dancers, underscoring the commitment to fostering growth and excellence within the sport.
