The Confederation of Australian Sport (CAS) welcomes the NSW Government’s announcement of $300,000 in seed funding to support the inaugural season of the Australian Championship.

The investment, delivered through the Government’s Project Support Program, will strengthen the competition’s capacity to engage multicultural communities, provide essential equipment and minor infrastructure upgrades at local venues, and ensure key matches are broadcast nationally.

CAS recognises this commitment as an important contribution to the cultural, historical and sporting significance of the Australian Championship, while also supporting the broader objectives of equity, access and participation across the sporting landscape.

Football Australia Interim Chief Executive Officer Heather Garriock said the funding represents a critical step forward for the sport.

“The Australian Championship is a game-changer for football by lifting historic community clubs and creating a bridge from grassroots to the professional level,” Garriock said. “This funding will help shine a spotlight on clubs with deep roots in NSW’s multicultural and regional communities.”

She added:

“I want to thank Minister Steve Kamper and the NSW Government for their commitment and support for our inaugural season of the Australian Championships. This investment will not only help clubs meet national standards but also connect communities across the state to this exciting new competition, bringing football – and its opportunities – to more people than ever before.”

Minister for Sport, The Hon. Stephen Kamper MP, said the program demonstrates how targeted investment can strengthen both pathways and participation.

“Sport plays an important role in community building and community harmony,” Minister Kamper said. “The NSW Government’s support of the Australian Championship will help build a cohesive pathway for emerging athletes and facilitate engagement within the multicultural communities of the participating NSW clubs.

It will also support the clubs to play in the national competition through infrastructure upgrades at their local grounds.”

CAS commends the NSW Government for recognising the value of this new competition and for investing in initiatives that improve access and participation for underrepresented groups. The Australian Championship will not only showcase emerging football talent but also create a lasting impact by connecting diverse communities and reinforcing the role of sport as a unifying force across the nation.
